Just about a month ago, I told y’all that we turned off Satellite. My subscription was not nearly what some of you said you paid, but it was constantly inching up. Also, our boxes were outdated and frequently glitched. The company wanted $75 just to come out and look at the outdated boxes. Then, of course we would need a 2 year contract to get new ones…..even though we have been with them for almost 15 years.
So, we started toying with the idea of cutting the cord. I have never had Netflix and have a handful of shows that I wanted to watch. We wanted LSU and Saints games and ended up increasing our satellite package during football season by about $30. We needed to be able to record because we never watch our shows when they are on. I wanted local news and I realllllly wanted to be able to fast forward through commercials.
You can read about all the streaming services we tried HERE. What I want to tell you about today is what I have learned and figured out since then. After a month, I just paid my 2nd PlayStation Vue bill and I haven’t missed A THING! Here is what I have learned:
First of all let’s talk about the news. I can get channel 6 and I think 8 news LIVE, but Channel 4 (CBS for those of you that may not be local to the NOLA area) is not on PSVue. I am sure there is a separate app or something, but I can at least get the weather in the morning without much trouble so that is fine with me.
I used to record The Young & the Restless everyday. I also record several Prime Time shows that my husband and I watch. But he works 7 on and 7 off, so we only watch during the 7 off. That is why I needed to be able to record.
With streaming, you are not really recording as much as bookmarking or short-cutting. I set up a feature called My Shows and it basically puts a folder of all your favorites in one place. Then, when there is a new show, it is flagged NEW. You can go back and watch it whenever you are ready.
The really cool thing is that you can decide to watch something after it has already been on and still get it in your My Shows! For example, I decided that I wanted to watch The Good Doctor. But it had already been on for 3 weeks.
I added it to My Shows and it showed the dates and what season and episode each file was. So, the entire season showed up in My Shows and I started from the Pilot.
Forget what you have watched? It shows if you watched it, are in the middle, or if it is UNWATCHED right there on the file.
I have not missed a single one of the shows that we wanted to see on the primetime, major networks.
This is a big one for a lot of people. They want their football and are terrified to cut that cord and miss it. As far as LSU, I have not missed a single game. I have found every game either on ESPN apps, SEC channels or on the major networks. No extra fees or subscriptions.
Saints – This one took me some time to figure out, but it is a bit more complicated. Most of the Saints games are on FOX. They appear on the grid/guide, but when you click on them, it is not available. So, I had to download the Fox Sports GO app on the Fire TV stick. It does require validation, but once you are in, you can watch all the Sunday Saints games with just a click.
YES! I can fast forward on CBS shows, and most of the time on ABC and FOX. But not on NBC. I can NOT get the commercials during This Is Us to go faster! But, sometimes you just need a minute during that one anyway!
I was able to find an app for this and though it requires validation, I was able to get in. However, this is my one disappointment. The seasonal movies are just not there. If you like Chesapeake Shores, it is there. Both seasons…if you don’t watch it, you can start now! But, there are about 15 movies available and they are the same 15 that were there last month. None of the “Fall In Love” movies are there. I am truly hoping that Christmas will be more of a big deal and they will add more of those. But I am missing those Fall themed ones.
Now, I have one Fire TV Stick and one PlayStation. This has worked out fine for us. BUT! A lot of the tweaking that you do is through these apps. They are on the Stick and not the PS4. So, we will be getting another device so I don’t have to move the stick back and forth.
We considered the Fire TV rather than the stick, but I am SO glad we waited because now there is a NEW one! And it is better AND CHEAPER! In fact, it is so new, it won’t be released until THIS WEDNESDAY, October 25!
It works the same way the Stick does, but is just a tad bit stronger, faster, better! Compare them for yourself:
