Today’s Feature Mom is Nila Schneider. Nila was suggested to me by a high school friend for my cousin’s wedding cake back in February. She did a fantastic job on it. But, Nila doesn’t just make wedding cakes, she also creates cakes that make sick children’s dreams come true. Here is what Nila wants to tell you:
My name is Nila and I am a single mom who started out making cakes as a way to save some money on my kids’ birthday cakes. I have not ever taken any classes and am completely self taught out of my love for what I do. I just got in the kitchen and played and practiced and you can now see the end result (although I would like to take some classes to better my skills). I do have to give credit to countless hours watching every cake decorating show out there, trying to learn new techniques and about new products. After doing my son’s cake back in 2007, more and more people started asking me to make their cakes and my cakes became a way to make a few extra dollars on the side. All my adult life, I have worked a full time desk job until January 2011 when I became another victim of the economy and lost that job. My cakes, cookies & cupcakes have since turned into a full time job that I love. Since then, for the first time in my life I’ve become a SAHM and have been able to devote most of my time to expanding my business. I do what I do out of complete love for it and hope to be able to continue as long as I can.
I pretty much do it all from custom specialty cakes, cupcakes, hand decorated cookies and various other desserts. When time permits, I offer a cupcake sampler that includes 3-4 different flavored cupcakes and includes free local delivery.
My newest venture is near and dear to my heart. Though it’s only in the infancy stages, I have began a causes page on facebook called: Custom Cakes for Causes. I am currently donating 1-2 cakes per month to families with children who are either chronically or terminally ill. It’s sort of like “Make A Wish” but only with cake. This past Friday I did a cake for my first recipient, a little boy named Ronnie. It was so rewarding and I hope to find some other local bakers who would like to also join in for the cause because these children are true hero’s and deserve a little happiness.
I would also like to offer all new fans a chance to win a $25 gift certificate. Any new fan who “likes” my facebook pages and posts on my wall that Northshore Mama sent you will be entered into a drawing to win. The random drawing will be on October 1st. Also anyone placing an order between now and October 1, just mention that you saw it on Northshore Mama and you will receive 15% off and the discount will apply to any future orders also.
