Winn Dixie King Cakes! My Review and a Giveaway!

This post may contain sponsored or affiliate links.

Last week, I got a call from Winn-Dixie asking if I would like to do a review and giveaway of one of their King Cakes. Of course, I jumped and said YES!

This post is sponsored by Winn-Dixie. All photos, opinions and experiences are mine.

Now, let me knock your socks off here……I’m not a big Mardi Gras person. (go ahead, catch your breath….I’ll wait….all better?)  Don’t worry! My faithful sidekick Victoria has enough Mardi Gras spirit for the both of us!

So, yeah, it’s just not my thing. I do love a good King Cake, though. But – I don’t care for the traditional “McKenzie’s” type. I remember having those in school for people’s birthdays and HATING them. (go ahead, catch your breath….I’ll wait….all better?)

Also – I don’t like the plain ones. I want my King Cake moist and gooey and filled with cream cheese!

Winn-Dixie has lots of flavors to choose from whether you like plain – they had those – or you like them filled with cinnamon, apple, cream cheese, strawberry, blueberry, pralines and cream, bavarian cream………just to name a few.

The last time I did this, I took home a fresh from the deli/bakery STRAWBERRY CREAM CHEESE filled King Cake.

I decided I should try something different this year. So, over the weekend, with kids in tow, we headed to my local Winn Dixie and met with the Store Manager. He said I could choose whichever kind I liked. This time, I let the kids choose and they selected CHOCOLATE!

As you can see in the pictures above, a Winn-Dixie King Cake has all the festive flair of a traditional cinnamon King Cake and my kids were dying to dig in!  So, I cut into the cake and immediately struck gold…..or brown. I hit a pocket of yummy, shiny, chocolate filling! It was semi-sweet, so it kind of cut the super sweetness of all the sugar and icing.   Of course, you fully get the expected flavor of King Cake and layers of cinnamon laced bread, but with an ooey, gooey center full of rich chocolaty goodness.

I asked my kids what they thought and with purple-sugar-coated lips, they both gave a thumbs up and rolled their eyes up into their heads in dramatic delight.

I feel like some of us locals become “King Cake Snobs” and would “never buy a grocery store King Cake”. (I might have even been one of those snobs.)  I have even heard of businesses who have weekly King Cakes, implementing rules that you must bring a bakery cake, not a grocery store cake. But, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the Winn-Dixie cake and would certainly buy this cake again.

Also, the MEDIUM cake that I got was a good sized cake. Not huge, but certainly not the small circle cake that you find sometimes. But, y’all, it was only $10! There is a smaller one as well! These are priced perfectly for a classroom or office King Cake party.

So, $10 for a nice medium sized cake that TASTES GREAT…..that’s Northshore Mama approved for sure!

DID YOU KNOW that Winn-Dixie has partnered with Ochsner Hospital for Children this carnival season?

The neighborhood grocer will also donate a percentage of its king cakes sales throughout Mardi Gras season to the healthcare system. Dollars raised will impact the lives of young patients and support programs such as the Michael R. Boh Center for Child Development, which offers personalized, family-centered patient care to children with a range of physical, cognitive and behavioral disabilities.

Building on its support for Ochsner Hospital for Children, Winn-Dixie has partnered with Riverdale High School’s Art Program to custom design 63 second line umbrellas, representing its 63-year history in South Louisiana. The Second Line Umbrellas will be featured at the King Cake Festival, and also showcased at select New Orleans area Winn-Dixie stores.

After reading your review, I think I’ll try a Winn-Dixie king cake. I usually would not buy a king cake from a grocery store. I have my favorite bakeries that I buy from. Can’t wait to try one!

  15. Summer says:

I’m not a cream cheese fan so I usually opt for plain or bavarian cream. I’ve had a really good pecan praline king cake too! I’m open to trying anything as long as it’s not cream cheese :)

  16. Amy Fazzio says:

I am that king cake snob. I have not tried Winn-Dixie’s BUT every time I try a grocery store king cake, it always disappoints. My king cake has to be fresh and soft. And cream cheese is also my fave! I think I may have to try Winn-Dixie’s now.

  17. Ann Saucier says:

Our family is crazy. I like the plain, my husband is any fruit filling, my oldest will eat anything, and my youngest will not eat the icing.

  18. Madeline Lonergan says:

My husband likes pecan praline and I like the cream cheese or Bavarian cream the best!
